los angeles art - design-build firm in LA concept

Breaking Ground in the City of Angels

Los Angeles is widely recognized as the cultural, financial, and commercial center of Southern California. Founded in 1784 by settlers consisting of Native American, African and European heritage who christened it “El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles de Porciúncula”. Early Los Angeles architecture was influenced by the fusion of Spanish and Native American styles common to Mexico in the late 18th century.

The oldest remaining example of original Lost Angeles architecture, the Ávila Adobe is a perfect example of the simple, earth-hewn adobe structures built in the era, which are well-suited for the southern California climate. The adobe also makes efficient use of abundant local resources in its construction. The fact that the Ávila Adobe, built in 1818 still stands today is a testimonial to the practicality and resilience of the building style.

Los Angeles Architecture Shaped by Culture and Climate

The city of Angels has been a symphony of intermingling cultures from the beginning and Los Angeles architecture and interior design reflects this. Interior design in Los Angeles runs the gamut from chic and modern quiet luxury to classic Spanish Revival and just about anything else you can imagine. The exquisite climate of Southern California has an absolute influence on both exterior and interior design in LA to be sure.

Hot, dry summers and mild, damp winters are the norm in LA. This has guided the development of Los Angeles architecture towards designs that interact harmoniously with the landscape and climate. This is evident in features like wide, open spaces to allow for natural cross ventilation, large windows that invite natural light, and overhanging eaves for shade, for example.

LA’s cultural life is an eclectic mix of the traditional and the avant-garde, with influences from various diverse enclaves like Boyle Heights, Chinatown, Echo Park, Historic Filipinotown, and Koreatown. These neighborhoods bring piquant flavor to the city’s cultural fabric, with their distinct cuisines, festivals, and traditions. Each area also contributes its own nuances to the Los Angeles interior design and architecture. Those who are looking for a design-build firm in LA should find a company that understands and nods to the rich history of architecture and design for the area they’ll be helping you in.

Los Angeles Architecture and Design Highlights

Walt Disney Concert Hall

The marvelous home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic was designed by Frank Gehry and is known for its ultramodern silver exterior and world-class acoustics.  This metallic shell-like structure is composed of a series of interconnected sections that form a common volume shared by both orchestra and audience. The egalitarian design was intentional and inspired by the former director of the philharmonic who felt boxes and balconies reinforced social hierarchies within the audience.

The Huntington Library

The Huntington Library has a lot to offer both Los Angeles architecture buffs and lovers of art and nature alike. The library itself exists within the former mansion of Henry and Arabella Huntington. The Mediterranean Revival residence was designed in 1920 by southern California architect Myron Hunt and incorporates elements of the French Beaux-Arts style. The grounds also feature beautiful botanical gardens and an art museum.

Balboa Highlands Historic Zone

This neighborhood in the north San Fernando Valley was constructed between 1962-64 by California developer Joseph Eichler. Many of the homes here have been featured in movies and television shows. It’s easy to understand why, as the Eichler homes represent a flawless example of the prized mid-century modern aesthetic that has seen a tremendous resurgence in appreciation in recent years. Thankfully the property owners and local government saw fit to protect the homes for posterity.

The Broad Museum

Another fine example of ultramodern architecture in Los Angeles The Broad Museum in downtown LA. Designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro, this contemporary art museum features a distinctive honeycomb-like exterior structure known as “the veil and the vault”. The 120,000-square-foot building houses over 2,000 works of art in the Broad Collection. The unique outer walls deliver filtered natural daylight throughout the wide, columnless halls of the gallery creating an ethereal atmosphere.

LA Has a Rich Arts Scene

LA is known for its rich arts scene, in fact, Los Angeles boasts more museums and theaters than any other U.S. city, offering a treasure trove of experiences for art enthusiasts. It’s little wonder that LA’s love for art is reflected in its architecture and interior design.

From Spanish Colonial Revival and Mission Revival styles that hark back to the city’s early days to the sleek and contemporary ultramodern structures, LA’s architecture is a testament to its ever-evolving identity. New World Design Builders and K2 Studios are proud to have helped craft a beautiful rooftop oasis right amidst LA’s famous Melrose Avenue. Catch LA is a magnificent seafood restaurant with enchanting views of the sun-kissed Hollywood Hills from its rooftop garden seating area.
