The Thriving Cultural Mosiac of Miami

Miami is a living, breathing city that pulses with energy. A rich multicultural mélange where art, music, design, and cuisine all reflect the historical diversity of its residents. The city is a haven for art lovers, with a thriving contemporary art scene centered around the world-renowned Art Basel Miami Beach and the colorful murals of Wynwood Walls.

Miami’s soundtrack ranges from the pulsating rhythms of Afro-Cuban beats in Little Havana to the electronic dance music that powers South Beach nightclubs. The energy here is infectious and it’s everywhere you look.

Cuisine in Miami is a gastronomic adventure and a gourmand’s delight. From authentic Cuban sandwiches and Haitian griot to gourmet fusion cuisine served in upscale eateries, the city offers a tantalizing array of flavors to please the most discerning palates.

Miami Architecture

As you may have surmised, it’s Miami architecture and design that excites us most. Miami is a feast for the senses, for any building and design aficionado. Days and evenings alike showcase the pastel-hued Art Deco buildings of South Beach and sleek modernism of Brickell’s skyscrapers. The elegant Mediterranean-style villas in neighborhoods like Coral Gables offer sanctuary to Florida locals who call Miami home.

Miami is renowned for its masterful blending of the old with the new. The city’s architectural landscape is a rich tapestry of styles, from Art Deco to Mediterranean, and more recently, Miami Modernist (MiMo) architecture. MiMo is a regional style that emerged in South Florida during the post-war period. The style combines elements of modernism with local influences, resulting in buildings that are both functional and stylish.

Miami Architecture and Design Highlights

The Ancient Spanish Monastery

Formally known as the St. Bernard de Clairvaux Church, this 12th-century Spanish monastery cloister was built in the Province of Segovia in Spain. Purchased by William Randolph Hearst in 1926, it was painstakingly disassembled and shipped across the Atlantic to NYC and eventually reconstructed at its present location in Miami. It is a rare treat for history buffs and anyone keen to see the elder statesman of Miami architecture.

Bacardi Building

The Bacardi Building at 2100 Biscayne Blvd is actually a complex of two buildings. The Bacardi Imports Tower, designed by Cuban architect Enrique Gutierrez and built in 1963 and the 1973 Bacardi Imports Administration Annex. The Bacardi Tower is also known locally as The Blue Tile Building facade created by Brazilian ceramist Francisco Brennand. The Annex is also known as “The Jewel Box” for the colorful, Mesoamerican-themed glass mosaic displayed on all 4 sides.

New World Center

We’re fans of the New World Center, and not just because of the name. The New Word Center is part of the New World Symphony America’s Orchestral Academy and sits right in the heart of Miami Beach. Designed by Frank Gehry, the New World Center represents one of his quieter, more serene efforts. We think it’s a great example of Miami architecture at its best.

Art Deco Design

Art Deco, characterized by geometric patterns, bold colors, and lavish ornamentation, is perhaps the style most associated with Miami, particularly South Beach. This district boasts pristine examples of Art Deco design, evident in its historic buildings that have been meticulously preserved. Notably, SoBe’s clubs, bars, and restaurants embrace this style, creating a unique and glamorous nightlife experience.
